A
non-profit organization dedicated to providing medical attention
to those in need in our community
Dr.
Munish K. Batra, along with Dr. Michael Halls, founded Doctors
Offering Charitable Services (DOCS) in March of 2002. While San
Diego is home to a number of non-profit medical organizations, it
had yet to see the establishment of a non-profit dedicated solely
to the arena of reconstructive surgery for the citizens of South
California. While the doctors involved do spend time traveling
abroad to perform surgeries in third world countries, the main
focus of the DOCS organization is attending to the incredible need
that exists here within our own community.
The
diversity that lends California much of its character, also
results in a community of people who cannot always afford
necessary medical services. More than 20% of those residing in
“America’s Finest City” San Diego take in less then $18,000
annually, with one in three children living in poverty. This group
of people largely consists of migrant workers, Native Americans,
and other minorities. In addition, there are subsets of the
population such as victims of domestic violence and the homeless,
including children, who do not have ready access to medical care.
